Fort Canning Park

Farquhar Garden

(Under National Parks Board, Singapore)

Fort Canning Park, Singapore

Area: 0.1 ha

Completion: 2019

Farquhar Garden is designed to enhance the experience to Fort Canning Park, as part of the Fort Canning Park redevelopment plan. Situated between the National Museum of Singapore and the Singapore Management University, the garden serves as one of the gateway into Fort Canning Park proper. To improve the visibility of the park, a vista is created by clearing the existing vegetation that obscured the view towards the Fort Canning Centre. This clearing draws and give a welcome view to visitors arriving from the direction of the National Museum.

The former Stamford Green site consists of a segment of the pedestrianised Canning Rise, and converted into a series of green spaces featuring various types of plants. The plants are species grown by Major William Farquhar as part of the experimental planting in the First Botanic Garden, and plants native to the region documented in the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings. It consists of 477 botanical drawings of flora and fauna of Singapore and Malacca between 1819 and 1823.

Lining the viewing paths also contain sitting areas and open spaces provided for families and friends to gather to enjoy the planting displays. The design of the sitting doubles as an edging for the planting area - beginning as flushed to the ground and gradually rising to form a seat.
